Step 1

Prepare your home for your Shichon puppy. Puppy-proof your house similarly to the way you would child-proof a home. Remove small objects that could be swallowed, move any potentially toxic plants out of the puppy's reach, put locks on cabinet doors and secure electronic wires so they can't be chewed.

Step 2

Purchase puppy supplies in advance. Your Shichon will need a few basic objects to be comfortable in her new home. Food and water dishes, veterinarian approved food, a safe chew toy, leash and harness and a bed or crate will be enough to get you both off to a good start.

Step 3

Take your Shichon to the veterinarian for a puppy check-up. Many veterinarian offices offer inclusive medical plans that cover all the basic tests and vaccinations a new puppy will need at a discounted price when you pay for everything in advance.

Step 4

Feed your new puppy according to your veterinarian's recommendations.

Step 5

Socialize your Shichon puppy by enrolling him in an obedience class once all vaccines are completed. This will not only teach you the skills you need to successfully train your puppy but will provide him with the opportunity to gain confidence in the world outside of your home.

Step 6

Let your puppy rest when she is tired. Remember that a puppy is a baby that requires many hours of sleep per day.
